January Wild West Trivia

The first Monday of each month I post a Wild West Trivia Question. Please leave your answer or best guess in the comment section of the blog post for a chance to win one of my books. At the end of the week, I’ll draw a name from all those who entered the contest and post the winner’s name in the comment section–be sure to check back to see who wins!

Question:  The telephone was invented in 1876. The first community to have a telephone after the White House telephone was installed was…

  1. I don’t understand why Deadwood, South Dakota was chosen, but more trivia said, “It was estimated that 90% of women living in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1876 were prostitutes.” Hmmm. Is there a connection (other than a telephone connection), LOL?

  2. Google tells me “The first telephone system, known as an exchange, which is a practical means of communicating between many people who have telephones, was installed in Hartford, Connecticut in 1877…” And, “Deadwood had South Dakota’s first telephone exchange, established by Paul Rewman in March 1878.”

  3. Several areas seem to have “first connections” : Brantford, New Haven, Deadwood.
It depends on which on which inventor is being mentioned as to which community is
    the “winner.”

  4. Congratulations to Pat Cochran, the winner of my January Wild West Trivia question! As several readers pointed out there’s a debate on who was the first community/city/town to have a telephone after the white house. But…since this is a Wild West Trivia ? I figured most of you would choose Deadwood, S.D. 🙂 But I do think the answer is muddy on this question. Thank you everyone for participating and I hope you’ll come back next month to check out my February trivia question!
