Christmas is almost here but I still need to bake my cookies. I love searching for sugar cookie recipe on the Internet. This year I’m trying Kittencal’s Buttery Cut-Out Sugar Cookies!
What’s your favorite Christmas cookie?
COOKIES
• 1 cup butter, softened (no substitutes)
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
In a large bowl combine butter with sugar, eggs, vanilla and almond extract; beat using an electric mixer on high speed until light and fluffy.
In another bowl combine the flour with baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually stir into the butter mixture until well blended.
Cover bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours.
Set oven to 400°F.
Line cookie sheets with parchment paper (do not grease cookie sheets use parchment paper only).
On a very lightly floured surface roll out the dough into about 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters. Place cookies 2-inches apart on cookie sheet.
Bake 4-6 minutes. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely before icing.
I enjoy making/eating snickerdoodles or fat sugar cookies with icing.
I will have to try your recipe. It’s similar to my sugar cookie recipe except for the almond extract.

I have never met a cookie I didn’t like. They are my downfall. I can’t stop eating them until they are all gone!
I recently made peanut butter cookies to thank my sister Kathi for always being there. The Better Crocker cookie mixes are so great and easy. However, having had a grandmother who was Baker of the month in Wichita Falls TX at 80 years old, I plan to start trying and experimenting on some desserts. I love to cook! I am keeping up my momma’s traditions for Christmas and Thanksgiving by putting the turkey in the oven the night before so I can wake up to the smell of turkey !
Rosanne–I’m trying to get better in the kitchen and experimenting with different recipes–some turn out some don’t but it’s fun to try new things!
I’m more of a cook than a baker. My sister loves my sweet potato casserole and says it may as well be dessert.
My favorite Christmas cookies are jelly thumb prints. They are a butter cookie and there filled with your favorite jelly then drizzled with a almond glaze. They are so good.
Therese, my grandmother used to make a cookie similar to that and they were excellent!
Sounds good, Marin, but way to complicated for me! 🙂 I make Toll House cookies from the recipe on the bag of semi-sweet chips. I add 1/4 cup mini chips & 1/4 cup of butterscotch chips for extra sweetness. Merry Christmas!
Sharlene–I hadn’t thought to add butterscotch chips to the recipe but I bet the cookies taste great with the added flavor.
Gingerbread cookies for me…They are easy…I just buy the premade gingerbread and then use different cookie cutters to make the shapes bake and decorate. What I made today was my homemade Pumpkin Bread.. Four loaves..

I love oatmeal spice cookies but haven’t made them in a while, also like chocolate chip.
Oatmeal spice sounds really good, especially to eat with tea 🙂
My favorite cookie is the sugar cookie that can be cut with CHRISTMAS cookie cutters and decorated with red, green and white icings.
I love decorating the sugar cookies, Jackie–the more frosting the better 🙂

I agree with the “thumbprint” cookie being the best! It’s got that little glob of jelly that is so refreshing! My niece makes eggnog cookies and they are wonderful. I don’t know the recipe, but they are great with hot tea. Iced cookies don’t work for me – too sweet, too messy. But of course they are kids’ favorites!

I thought I’d share a Dutch tradition for New Years: “Olie Bollen” which are basically fritters (deep-fried, yeasty dough) rolled in powdered sugar. Eat them while they are warm! Some people put raisins in them. My mom used to make and serve them at midnight when we were kids. My dad told me yesterday that he went to church New Years Day morning, and they served olie bollen after church. Perfect for him, being, what else?, an elderly Dutch guy! I was so glad he was able to still enjoy this tradition at 92 years of age. Happy New Year to you and your family! (On another subject, my sister had snow in Tucson yesterday morning! It’s true — I saw a picture!)
Hilda, thanks for sharing your “Dutch” tradition–sounds yummy! It’s wonderful that your father is 92. MY grandmother made it to 94 and I remember years earlier talking to her and how she thought the microwave oven was the best invention ever 🙂 She didn’t like to cook, lol! I heard about snow flurries in Phoenix–crazy weather everywhere!
Since I was little we always made Peanut Butter Blossoms for Christmas. You can vary the flavor by varying the Hershey’s Kiss flavor on these cookies.

I love cookies, but usually go for something fast and easy. Ginger snaps are pretty darn good.
kyleswaters, gingersnaps remind me of my grandmother–she used to bake them all the time.
